ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Scientists from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) examined a wolf killed in Otsego County in December 2021. The DEC explains their study presented interesting opportunities to advance their work. Are wolves returning to the Adirondacks? DEC along with The New York State Museum analyzed carbon and nitrogen isotopes from the wolf's hair, bones and teeth. These isotopes can show the type of diet the animal has had throughout its life. The DEC explains canines specifically doglike animals that are raised in captivity often have a diet of commercial dog food or grain-fed livestock. The doglike canine isotope ratios are different than a canine eating a wild diet like a wolf. The DEC elaborates that wolves are rare but a few have been documented in NYS. Gray wolves are protected under both the federal Endangered Species Act and New York’s endangered and threatened species regulations. Although wolves are rare, the DEC warns of its cousin the c...

Dick Fosbury dies: “Fosbury Flop” high jumper was 76

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:00:57 GMT

Dick Fosbury, the lanky leaper who revamped the technical discipline of high jump and won an Olympic gold medal with his “Fosbury Flop,” has died. He was 76.Fosbury died Sunday after a recurrence with lymphoma, according to his publicist, Ray Schulte. Before Fosbury, many high jumpers cleared their heights by running parallel to the bar, then using a straddle kick to leap over before landing with their faces pointed downward. At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, Fosbury took off at an angle, leaped backward, bent himself into a “J” shape to catapult his 6-foot-4 frame over the bar, then crashed headfirst into the landing pit.It was a convention-defying move, and with the world watching, Fosbury cleared 2.24 meters (7 feet, 4 1/4 inches) to win the gold and set an Olympic record. By the next Olympics, 28 of the 40 jumpers were using Fosbury’s technique. The Montreal Games in 1976 marked the last Olympics in which a high jumper won a medal using a technique other than the Fosbury Flop.“Th...

EPA’s proposed change on PFAS limits would deem dozens of Colorado water sources unsafe

Dozens of water sources across Colorado previously thought to be safe would now violate the federal maximum contaminant level for PFAS, or toxic “forever chemicals,” under a new standard proposed Tuesday. The long-anticipated federal proposal slashes the Environmental Protection Agency’s previous standard by nearly 95%, indicating that the chemicals are far more hazardous than previously thought. The proposal has broad implications for water sources across the country but Colorado is home to more contaminated sites than any other state.PFAS are linked to cancer, birth defects, diabetes and autoimmune problems. They don’t degrade naturally and accumulate in the bodies of the people and animals that ingest them. Experts who study the compounds repeatedly say there’s no safe level of exposure.Previously acceptable levels for two types of chemicals, one called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and another called perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) sat at 70 parts per trillion. But under the n...
