Thairo Estrada pre-game speech snaps SF Giants out of funk

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants are at a critical point in the season. A continued skid could bury chances at a playoff berth. A wake up call can revive them amid an increasingly competitive Wild Card run.No alarm seemed to be sounding as the Giants lost seven straight series and 14 of their last 19 games heading into Sunday’s game. No obvious leader seemed to be emerging. So Thairo Estrada called a team meeting before the Giants’ final game against the Braves, hoping to prevent a sweep, to remind the team that they’re better than this — spoken in Spanish through an interpreter.“I told the team to go pitch-by-pitch, take the extra base. Do the things we were doing before to execute moving forward,” Estrada said. “Everybody knows we’ve had a difficult and challenging month, so I told the team to do positive things. It was a positive message. We have a month left and we still have a chance for us to get in an not forget wh...

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Houston rookie C.J. Stroud threw his first touchdown pass as a pro and the Texans defeated New Orleans 17-13 on Sunday night in a preseason finale that was also marked by a couple Jimmy Graham highlights for the Saints.Graham looked determined not to let his mysterious medical episode and run-in with police last week derail his NFL comeback. The 36-year-old tight end, who signed with New Orleans last month after spending the previous season out of football, caught three passes for 34 yards and a touchdown. His catches were reminiscent of the way he played when Drew Brees was his quarterback in New Orleans from 2010 to 2014. He established leverage with his 6-foot-7 frame in tight coverage and came down with contested catches. His score on a 3-yard pass from Jameis Winston came shortly after his 25-yard grab had given New Orleans a first down on the Houston 11.After his touchdown — which delighted a Superdome crowd longing to see the ever popular Graham score for t...

But actor Jason Bowen explains that “The Half-God of Rainfall” is more concerned with humanity than the divine.“It’s about the intersection of Grecian gods and Yoruba gods out of Nigeria, who will sometimes war against each other so you have a story of an epic nature,” Bowen told the Herald. “But then you have a demigod who is birthed as a result of an assault by Zeus. That demigod grows up and has an internal conflict about the nature of his being… Vengeance comes into play, so does hubris, so does the nature of family, so does healing.”“And then, on top of all this you, you have basketball,” he added with a laugh. There’s a lot going on in “The Half-God of Rainfall,” which runs from Sept. 8 to Sept. 24 at the American Repertory Theater. But deftly unpacking complex stories and equally complex emotions is a specialty of p...

A 2018 survey of more than 1,000 hiring managers and human resources professionals revealed some surprising things about modern hiring practices. The survey, conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of CareerBuilder, provided a wealth of insight about the hiring process, including some of the unusual things people have done in interviews. Asked to share the most unusual things candidates have done during interviews, employers and hiring managers indicated job seekers had asked for a cocktail, broke out in song in the middle of an interview, asked to taste an interviewer’s coffee, and even wore a costume of Darth Vader to an interview.Though many of those replies undoubtedly elicited a laugh (and likely some shock), they indicate that many people aren’t entirely sure about how to act during a job interview. Most professionals probably don’t need to be told to avoid asking for a cocktail or to leave their costumes at home when leaving for an interview, but some might no...
