Douglas County deputy rescues bear cub from dumpster, puts ramp-making skills to the test On July 15, a bear cub searching for food followed its nose to a nearby dumpster, only to be met with a nasty surprise when it found itself trapped.Douglas County sheriff deputy Lee Jazombek responded to the call of the distressed bear and met up with Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer Sean Dodd, who was already on scene. The two surveyed the situation from the bed of a pickup truck to determine how to help the cub climb out without putting anyone else in danger. In a video posted by the sheriff’s department Thursday, Jazombek said he noticed a chain-link fence sitting to the side of the dumpster.Together, Jazombek and Dodd worked to slowly tip the fence in at an angle, and support it with a wooden plank, so the bear could climb out on the make-shift ramp. After the ramp was secure, a second CPW officer drove the truck Jazombek and Dodd were standing on away from the dumpster to allow the cub to escape and find its mother.“There he goes, that’s awesome, that’s ...

Opinion: U.S. has destroyed its chemical weapons; now all other nations need to follow suit This month the world witnessed one of the greatest arms control milestones of our generation. On July 7, we eliminated the United States’ last remaining stockpile of chemical weapons, in accordance with the Chemical Weapons Convention (The Convention).Overall, we destroyed 30,610 tons of chemical weapons, including at the Pueblo Chemical Depot. This global effort to destroy the world’s stockpiles – which has been decades in the making – has made the world a safer place for us and for future generations, and it proved that verifiable disarmament can work.It has been a long and sometimes challenging road, but we persevered and overcame obstacles to ensure the United States carried out the mission safely, effectively, and in partnership with state and local communities. I sincerely thank the dedicated Americans who were employed at facilities in Johnston Atoll and at installations in Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Maryland, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, and Kentucky. They all contributed to this...

Don’t “bully,” judge tells jurors in San Jose State athletic trainer’s sexual assault case A day after the jurors deciding the fate of San Jose’s State former athletic trainer accused of sexually assaulting female athletes hit a “rough patch” and ended deliberations early, the federal judge in the case admonished them Thursday to “not to bully or antagonize other jurors.”U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman also acknowledged to the eight women and four men who filed back into the courtroom that “the jury room is very small” and offered them an empty courtroom. But even that appeared to divide at least a couple of jurors, with the foreman nodding his head vigorously for more space and another juror saying they didn’t need it.The judge’s latest instructions came at the start of the fourth day of deliberations in the trial over whether Scott Shaw touched former athletes under their sports bras and underwear inappropriately, or whether doing so was medically legitimate treatment. The dust up provided a rare glimpse into secret jury deliberations in a case that rocked San Jo...
