Steve Kerr doesn’t have much time to rest.He has just a few days with family in Southern California before training begins for Team USA Basketball when August begins. The Warriors’ head coach will reprise his role leading the national team for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, with warm-up games in Las Vegas, Spain and the United Arab Emirates before next month’s tournament in the Philippines. But Kerr paused for a few minutes this week to debrief the Warriors’ busy offseason so far.On Dunleavy’s offseason movesKerr noted that he had been in constant communication with Mike Dunleavy Jr. when it became apparent former general manager Bob Myers was likely to leave his post once his contract ran out and Dunleavy was his likely successor. They got on the same page throughout the season about how the roster needed to change to keep the championship contention window open.“It’s seamless, really, given that he’s been here the last five years,” Ke...

Opinion: California foster youth suffer as state shortchanges agencies

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:45:13 GMT

California’s foster children are too often being warehoused in hotels, office spaces and former juvenile halls rather than receiving intensive services to heal their trauma.Christine Stoner-Mertz is CEO of the California Alliance of Child and Family Services. (Photo courtesy of Christine Stoner-Mertz.)The state is failing the children who need us most because it has failed to invest at every level of the system supporting them. The state budget just adopted offers a thin lifeline to essential programs for youth yet misses crucial opportunities to fix devastating gaps in our system for the most vulnerable young people. From the viewpoint of the nonprofit programs that help children heal and reunite families, a total collapse is on the horizon without a surge in funding, and better coordination among public and private sectors to meet the growing needs of vulnerable children.First, helping them starts with prevention. Family resource centers, embedded in communities and with the t...

Live updates | Mostly good scores early at challenging par-3 17th at British Open

SO FAR SO GOOD FOR MOST PLAYERS AT 17TH HOLEHOYLAKE, England (AP) — The much-hyped par-3 17th hole was producing more good scores than bad through the opening round of the British Open. The 136-yard hole at Royal Liverpool was redesigned to add drama to the tournament this year, challenging players with an elevated green well protected by steep slopes and deep bunkers. There were seven birdies and only one score of double bogey or worse at the hole early in the opening round. Lucas Herbert had a triple bogey, with his troubles starting after his tee shot went into the rough to left of the green. He found the deep right-side bunker from there and needed two shots to get out before two-putting.The wind wasn’t blowing too hard, making it easier for players.Bryson DeChambeau and Wyndham Clark were among the players who challenged the internal out-of-bounds boundary that cuts into the fairway at the third hole, with both hitting shots that went well left — away from the out-of-bounds troub...

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (AP) — “Deep in the Heart of Texas” blared from the speakers during a timeout a few days into the debut of a U.S. professional cricket league near Dallas.Fans waved the flags of the Texas Super Kings and the LA Knight Riders, with some wearing the jerseys of their favorite countries or clubs overseas. A couple had ballcaps of two of the biggest brands in the United States — the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees. This unusual confluence comes during the debut of Major League Cricket, which is hoping to find a foothold for one of the world’s most popular sports in a sports-mad country that knows little about the “other” bat-and-ball game.Because of a willing partner happy to see a fading minor league baseball stadium turned into one of the few legitimate cricket pitches in the country, the league made its start in Texas, famous for the Friday night lights of high school football. The 7,000-seat stadium is in Grand P...
